Works on Panel

After moving to Portland, I adopted panel as my preferred ground for painting based on its resistance to the brush, limited ability for the dried work to flex, and overall longevity. Building from my foundational art education in traditional methods, I’ve continued to push my technique and subjects, using landscape to explore meaning and memory.

Layering images including anatomical drawings, images of historical and mythical subjects to charge my ground with a palimpsest to work landscape images over the top of. This exploration of working allowed me to avoid being sentimental with my brush strokes, and instead work to establish the foundation of the image while allowing elements of the previous layers to peak through.

Developing the ideas explores in the two series on paper, these works started with hand-drawn maps, finished with egg tempera before the final landscape image was applied, playing the stark topographical lines and text against the rich and organic locales.
